The underlying concept behind the Why Should They? PSA is to highlight oceanic environmental concerns by interjecting them into situations in every day life. If we dont have to deal with such concerns in our daily lives then why should the marine wildlife?
The concept could therefore easily be applied to numerous other daily activities, highlighting different marine issues. By stylizing the PSAs to mimic well known advertising genres (e.g. a Nike style swim advert) the audience is misdirected until the environmental reveal at the end, enhancing the message.
The PSA was produced, shot and edited by Ed Watkins. It was lensed on a RED ONE in a 2hr shoot, and cost $35 to make (a pair of speedos).
