É um dos grandes nomes do passado/presente do soul e funk mundial. Um pouco distante por opção do estrelato alcançado por Verdine White e Bootsy Collins, Laboriel contribuiu muito para o desenvolvimento da música principalmente no início do movimento Gospel das igrejas americanas. Laboriel iniciou sua carreira como violinista flamenco, por influência do pai, Abe Laboriel Junior. Após concluir a faculdade de Música, na Universidade de Berklee, nos EUA, Laboriel começou a trabalhar em estúdios de gravação. Na época tocava contrabaixo. Um de seus grandes méritos foi trazer elementos do violino flamenco ao contrabaixo, emitindo um som ímpar do instrumento, o que lhe rendeu inúmeros trabalhos com artistas famosos como Stevie Wonder, Barbra Streisand, Al Jarreau, Chick Corea, Elton John, Ray Charles, Madonna, Paul Simon, Michael Jackson, Duran Duran e Julio Iglesias, Lee Ritenour.

Desde 1994, Abraham Laboriel vem se dedicando à música gospel.

É uma lenda viva que agrada dos mais saudosistas aos mais novos.
