Cats were brought to Cyprus decades ago during a plague of snakes to keep them under control. However, the number of cats were not controlled. Now, hundreds of cats roam Cyprus have no home to go to and are sometimes neglected.

This is one of the animal shelters in the centre of Paphos that has its doors open to all cats and is funded by donations and run by volunteers. While we were there, a space of 30 minutes, there were 10 new arrivals. Out of the 20 or so kittens that were there that day, only one survived, which was in fact the one we bottle fed.

  • In cyprus they prefer to take care of people.

Check your british national health service and get your priorities right.

And as a human, I prefer the cyprus option where i dont feel threatened walking at night.

  • What kind of foolish comment is that? The health services in Cyrpus and the Britian are completely different, different ways of life, different economy, different climates- comparing them isn't exactly clever. Also its the same generation here as it is over there that is making people scared to walk the streets at night, its not just Britian.

  • hello .. i am from cyprus we don't hate animals

  • Don't worry, we know you don't hate animals!!

  • why the cypriots hate cats and dogs ??

  • They don't hate them, they just treat them as a tame wild animal, they just aren't animal lovers like most

  • URGENT:

The animal welfare organisation in Nicosia is closing down next week. Around 70 dogs and 30 cats will be put down if homes are not found for them.... Please call Toula Poyiadzi on 00357-22-35 0530.

  • Keep up the good work guys :0) Im sickened by the cruelty to animals in Cyprus- its time we took a stand against it.

  • @SeeDoubleYouUK try australia you wont walk the streets at night . i live in australia . catch a train here no way. you will get your head bashed in . yet in other countries i feel very safe , walking the streets, and catching public transport.

  • @SeeDoubleYouUK are you kiding,,, you shuld not generalize this way... yes there is a percentage of aneducated bastards who behave in that way but it is unfair to judge all Cypriots by that!
