they do that because they did that with their mom while drinking her milk and some clothes, carpets, animals, blankets, pillows, ect. feel like their mother.

@IloveyouLenaKatina Not sure about the contentment thing, but I know that every time our cat did that to our pillows, there was that strange goo on them... So we started taking the pillows up the closet where it couldn't reach. Then it went for the blankets, so we moved the blankets up there too. Then it went for our shoes, then to the couch and so on... people were constantly shoving it away from their legs.
Associated with comfort, yes, BY CAT OWNERS, but nature isn't worried with being cute.

@caralhoman Not sure about the mating thing, but I know kittens do this when they are nursing from mom, and after that it becomes associated with comfort and contentment.
