This is one of the Sneaky's songs featured on the Heavenly Pop Hits doc. Since I grew up in Dunedin, I really like this video...

  • Does anyone know what this songs about? What is Husband House? Cheers

  • @22ness0hayden

I reckon its about getting married (husband) and settling down with kids - not something you want to do when you're young and in a band - it sure didn't work very well for Ian Curtis

  • I wonder why there's a fan on top of the amp in the shot where they're playing at the beach? Is it a comment on the fact that it's rarely hot on a Dunedin beach?

  • Nah, I reckon the fan is standard equipment when they play, to keep them cool under all the lights -- they probably just pulled it out as part of their normal set up...

  • Dont see too many 5 buck notes these days or bands as good as the ones flying nun had back in this era. Not many bands would come up to Putaruru and play in a band hall like these guys did. Awesoome.

  • An absolute favourite of mine from the early 1980s! Hasn't dated at all.

Love the Dunedin shots, esp. the Otago Peninsula ones. Very under rated city Dunners!

  • ok, i clearly won't ever get enough of this song

  • @22ness0hayden Matthew Bannister (the guy singing) knew some christian girls who flatted together in Dunedin. When asked about 'boyfriends' they told him about a house up the street from them full of christian boys that they referred to as 'husband house'. This was his response to his interpretation of the lives that these people lived. Its all in his awesome book Positively George Street which has to be the best NZ music book ever.

  • @22ness0hayden There was a flat of girl students in Dunedin that called the flat of boy students up the road as 'Husband House'. Matthew Bannister borrowed the name and concept. God it's a great song.

  • Great video, Dunedin seems amazing! Hope to visit NZ someday!

  • Majestic song.

  • this is a truly terrific song but i can't work out how they let him get away with that vocal take for the first verse, its really nervous and bad, then he gets going after that

  • @22ness0hayden As far as I can tell it's about being worried about commitment- leaving his friends and getting married.

  • @22ness0hayden Its a song written about Husand House in Dunedin where a group of christian boys lived. The singer was going out with a christian girl who told him about the place.

  • Quoting from Matthew Bannisters book 'Positively George Street';" I met a Christian girl who lived in an all female flat in Hope Street. Good name. I toyed with the idea of writing a song about it. When i asked where all the Christian boys were she said 'They live up the street at Huband house. we call it Husband House'.and a song was born.... Such a great song and equally good snapshot of Dunedin in the 80's
