How to solve a Rubik's Cube - Part 1: The First Layer

This first of 3 installments shows how to effectively complete the cross and the first layer.

Algorithms:




R U' R - to put corner in if cross color is facing to right
R U2 R' U' - to make the corner with the cross color facing up now face to the right.
L' U' L - to put corner in with cross color facing to the left and the corner in the left hand side.
U R U' R' U' F' U F - to move the center edge piece to the right hand side while the piece is lined up with the proper center.
U' L' U L U F U' F' - to move the center edge piece to the left hand side while the piece is lined up with the proper center.
F R U R U' F' - To make the single dot into the L shape.
F U R U' R' F' - To create the cross if the L is in the top left corner.
F R U R' U' F' - To create the cross with the line running from your left to right hand.
R U R' U R U2 R' - with piece in top left corner until the top makes the fish shape.
L' U' L U' L' U2 L - To make the entire top the same color with fish facing to the bottom right with top color in the top left position.
R U R' U R U2 R' To make the entire top the same color with the fish facing the bottom right and the top color in the top right position.
R2 B2 R F R' B2 R F' R - To cycle the corners around in sets of 3 with the solved corner in the bottom left.
R2 U F B' R2 F' B U R2 - To cycle the edges around in cycles of 3 with the solved side in the left hand.
M2 U M2 U2 M2 U M2 - Switches the edges with the edge directly across... helps with the last layer in some cases
