Matt Halpern Buttersnips (***improv performance***).mov

Just set up the drums in the basement and figured i'd mess around a bit with one of my band's songs. The sound quality isnt amazing, and sorry about the crazy cymbal feedback, but i havent put anything up in a while, and want to see how this turns out.

Some of my students have recently asked me to upload a drum video of Periphery's song "Buttersnips" as it was just released on RockBand 2 - they wanted to see my live interpretation of the song, so here it is!

A quick note - This performance was the first time i set up 2 floor toms in this configuration, definitely gonna keep experimenting with this. Oh yeh, and also, this performance of "Buttersnips" was done in one take and many parts are "improv'd." Whether im recording for Periphery in the studio or performing live, i always improv my drum parts - so if my parts dont match the recording exactly, dont get upset, its supposed to be that way... its more fun.

Anyone who says Travis Barker sucks has no idea what they're talking about. He may not play intricate polyrhythms over Blink songs, but if you think about, how terrible would that sound? And plus, Barker probably can play polyrhythms, he just prefers not to. Do you honestly think these musicians go around comparing themselves to other musicians that play naturally in differing genres? No. If anything, they respect them for their musicianship and for what they do. As any real listener should do.

Matt, I have a question about your kick pedals. I saw your performance on Drum Channel with Terry Bozzio and saw you were using what looked to be either a Mapex Falcon or Raptor pedal. Have you ever used DW 9002 double pedals? I am thinking about selling them for the Raptors. Let me know what you think of them. Are they more responsive and easier to control than most pedals?

Very nice drumming! Saw you live with Periphery, during the Dream Theater show in the Netherlands. You got some mad drumskills! I hope I can get as good as this, with a lot of practice.

By the way: some microphones to record your drums would be nice! ;-)
