Participants in the 16-week individual transformation and career development program receive personal, social, spiritual and academic training to foster healthy personal development. They also take courses to enhance both soft and hard skills and receive employment placement assistance.

Orientation sessions are available by appointment only throughout July at 7700 Second Avenue in Detroits Northend Neighborhood. Those interested in scheduling an orientation appointment may call (313) 557-4821.

Flip the Script was created to engage Detroits young men in learning how to overcome devastating socio-economic circumstances and reconstruct their lives. In 2008, the program moved into a new expanded facility and currently is capable of serving 180 young men per year. Since its inception in 2003, more than 80 percent of Flip the Script graduates have engaged in meaningful career opportunities. Many find employment in construction, various building trades and related careers. The success of the program in Detroit has generated interest from other communities and organizations that may seek to replicate the results in their own neighborhoods.

Through Flip the Script and other programs, Goodwill Industries and its partners work to meet an important need for a city battling an exceptionally high unemployment rate among minority males. Flip the Script participants often come from backgrounds that include addiction or abuse, dropping out of school, periods of homelessness, or trouble with the law.

In just the past two years, Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit has helped 2,500 people in Metro Detroit find a job through its employment training and support programs and has provided career assistance to thousands more throughout the region.

We want the young men of Detroit to know that regardless of how low they might think they are on the social ladder, they are capable of contributing to society and becoming strong heads of their families, said Lorna G. Utley, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit. Our Flip the Script program helps them realize their potential to become economically self-sufficient and instills the desire to change the direction of their lives.
