Pan Am Flight 103 was Pan American World Airways' third daily scheduled transatlantic flight from London Heathrow Airport to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. On Wednesday 21 December 1988, the aircraft flying this route—a Boeing 747--121 named Clipper Maid of the Seas—was destroyed by a bomb, killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew members. Eleven people in Lockerbie, in southern Scotland, were also killed as large sections of the plane fell in the town and destroyed several houses, bringing total fatalities to 270. As a result, the event has been named by the media as the Lockerbie bombing.

On 24 February 2011, Libya's former justice minister Mustafa Abdul Jalil said that Muammar Gaddafi had personally ordered the Lockerbie bombing.

  • At 44:49, is it just me, or does that plane have an extra engine on the left wing?

  • @SuperEd311 Youre right. I don't remember the Air India episode by Air Crash Investigation very well, but i think it was a non-used engine which had to be transported. So they simply put an 5th engine underneath the left wing, next to engine #2. If you want to watch this episode, it's called "Air India: Explosive Evidence (S05E07)"

  • damn thats 2nd pan ma b747 destroyed.

  • @ss04to06 yeah it was made clear in the episode but how could the director didn't even discuss about it in the episode. I am huge fan of Mayday series and there hasn't been one single episode which didn't say "CVR", "FDR".

  • @sarmadhassan It was made clear during the episode that everything about the flight was normal/routine. The CVR would have had the pilots possibly talking to ATC or to themselves while the FDR would have shown an airplane in cruise mode until the explosion. The explosion would have cut off the CVR and FDR instantly (see the Air India episode of Mayday).

  • I don actually believe in conspiracies, but still how can such a small bit of electronics can be used as a proof of a bomb ?? It could have been of someone breaking a radio, a cassette player or watever.. I fail to believe it everytime i try..

  • Now gaddafi is in hell

  • i don't understand why they released al megrahi because he was dying- 2 years later, hes still alive WTF

  • @itskirstybetchx took more than 2 years to do though. Doesn't make it any less impressive though :)

  • @sarmadhassan I think it was because it was a bomb that caused the crash so there was no point in the episode showing those things as they wouldnt give anything extra to the episode. But as you say Im sure in real life they looked and found the black boxes.

  • Gaddafi found the bullet, trigger pulled by his own countrymen.

  • its nicely constructed episode and I am a fan of Mayday series but why they didnt include FDR or CVR incorporated in this episode ? I am sure investigators would have definitely looked for black boxes. That is the first thing they do ?
