Springer finished third in the Democratic primary for Governor of Ohio behind the winner, former Lt. Governor Dick Celeste, and Attorney General Billy Joe Brown. The seat came open when Republican Governor Jim Rhodes was forced to retire due to term limits. Celeste defeated the Republican candidate, Congressman Clarence "Bud" Brown in the General election.
