I've always liked this song, and, at least for me, it's great practice because I have a tough time playing the bass line and doing anything else with my right hand at the same time. Bass is done on a Nord G2X, drums are from an Alesis SR-16 (pattern is mine), lead is a Kawai K3, Clav and Organ on a Yamaha S90 and the Rhodes is, uh, a Rhodes (1974 Mark 1 Stage). The Rhodes is going through a Tube MP preamp and a Maxon Phase Shifter (mono in, stereo out). The reverb on the Rhodes is a TC Electronics M300.

I wanted to record something a bit tricky and something that would use most of my stuff. It's amazing how much more difficult it is to record alone in a front of a camera than it is to play in front of a bunch of people. This version is certainly not perfect but this was the best of a bunch of tries. Video was done on a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3.

  • Headhunters...I dig it! Great job Mark! I love the sounds of your keys!

Fellow Gearslutz here - aka Mad John.

    Cheers,

  • @undergroundjohnny

Thanks Mad John, appreciate the comments! All of those keys are gone now, except the Rhodes. Starting over with a Kurzweil K2600XS.

  • Thanks. I needed a rack to hold some 88 key boards, and be strong enough to hold an 88 Rhodes, so I built it using pipe and something called key clamps. The combination is rated at over 1000 pounds.

  • Very good!

I can't play bass riff and theme\improvisation simultaneously...((

Do you had a special practice for this or it's your usual independence between hands?

  • Thanks! I've been playing for 45 years, and spent alot of time playing alone so I did left hand bass most of the time. A great song to practice hand independence is the theme from the Charlie Brown cartoons, by Vince Guaraldi and called "Linus and Lucy".

  • nice jamming :)

  • Thanks!

  • ...and more importantly, nice rack setup. Looks DIY, and very functional.

  • "Linus and Lucy"... I'll try! Thanks!

I began to play jazz 6 years back. So I have a time for practice.

  • Thanks for the comment!
