You're an absolute moron if you believe consumer electronic devices can possibly interfere with a flight. I design aircraft electronics for a living, and being an electronic engineer, I can tell you, with absolute certainty, no consumer electronics can possible interfere with a flight.

In fact, turning on devices from an off-state produces way more EMI than a phone turned on, and kept in airplane mode. Turning on devices require a surge of current and it's current that produces magnetic fields.

The current FAA regulations on electronic devices were developed in an era when there were few, if any, personal electronic devices on board. It is a safe bet that the average passenger has more than one device with them when they travel. The chance that a frequent flyer will forget to turn off an iPhone, Kindle, iPad, laptop, GameBoy, etc. at least once is likely close to 100%. Instead of sending threatening letters, the FAA and the aviation industry should get together and create better rules.
