Trapdoor for the ZX Spectrum was a surprisingly good (if difficult) arcade adventure featuring large coloured sprites. This is a complete walkthrough - though bear in mind that it's been heavily edited (and sped up by about 20%) to fit into YT's 10-minute limit! The soundtrack borrows from the original cartoon and uses free samples taken from the web - credits given in the intro. Enjoy!

  • What did the spectrum audio sound like ?

  • The audio is pretty basic - the 48K spectrum only had a single-channel beeper, and people hadn't gotten to grips with ways to hack it yet (e.g. Tim Follin's 6-channel sound!). There's another walkthrough video with the original sound if you want to listen to it!

  • I used to love this game, it was quite non linear and you could do all kinds of crazy things! I must have been about 5/6 years old at the time! good graphics for the time.

  • It's a great game - and still surprisingly difficult:) Don Priestly pretty much defined the art of using big sprites to get around the Spectrum's colour limitations, and it works really well for cartoon characters!

  • used to love his game, i remember always forgetting to cook the eggs and sending them up cold! lol!

  • The tricky bit is catching the smegging things: they fall behind you if you're not careful, so you have to make sure you're standing at the right height...

  • i always use to put boney on the trap door and flip him in to the air lol

  • The graphics in this game were really impressive for the Spectrum!

  • very unique game and graphics engine!

  • Jesus Christ, how were you EVER supposed to figure this out....

  • jeez

well done mate..; you had a lot of patience to get through this game ******

  • Fantastic! I never could boil the slimies.

What I used to do with Drutt was to put him in the eyeball box using the trap door then stash him on a shelf. I had the CPC version, pretty much identical although the timer bar was vertical and on the right side of the screen for some reason.

  • Hmm it was always too sluggish for me to feel playable but it was an impressive technical achievement from DP.

  • Wonderful!

  • one of my fave games ever, never could finish it though.
