The Superstars - 1979 UK Final - Basketball

The basketball event from the 1979 UK Final of.. The Superstars!

The final was staged in Cwmbran, Wales, and despite the weather conditions it proved to be a high class final.

Brian Jacks had won the UK and shared a win in the European final the previous year and came back as defending champion. He had won the first two events but faced tough competition in the basketball event, which was new to Superstars that year.

Jacks sets off and posts a pretty good time for five baskets, only to be beaten by both Daley Thompson and then Past Masters champion for that year, John Sherwood.

He finished 7th in the basketball event, but due to Superstars having to fit everything inside an hour, not all competitors' attempts in all events were actually shown.

I couldn't agree more with that sentiment.

For many of us, David Vine and Ron Pickering helped make Superstars what it was. Vine's commentary and insight together with his knowledge of all things do do with Superstars is nothing short of legendary (Brian Jacks mentions it on the Superstars DVD) and that's what made him stand out.

That and the snooker, for definite. It's a sad, sad loss.

Anyone remember what happened when Brian Jacks entered the 'dips' competition? He not only beat everyone (including the gymnasts) but set a new world record, too! He was unbelievable in his day!
