Joanna Newsom (born January 18, 1982) is an American harpist, pianist and singer-songwriter from Nevada City, California. Newsom grew up in the small town of Nevada City, California. As a child, Newsom was not allowed to watch television or listen to the radio, because she was raised by doctors who were "kind of idealists when it came to hoping they could protect us from bad influences, like violent movies, or stupid stuff". She was exposed to music from a young age. Her father played the guitar and her mother was a classically trained pianist who played the hammered dulcimer, the autoharp and conga drums. She attended a Waldorf school where she studied theater and learned to memorize and recite long poems. This skill helps her to remember lyrics while on tour- wiki

  • Her voice also has a range of tone that is not only broad but flexible. She can go from lows to highs without losing pitch and she takes vocal risks that other more well known singers would fail at. Johanna is a great artist and entertainer. There will always be critics among the undiscerning.

  • Newer interviews show that her speech is more clear now. And in a way that is sad because I think it gave her voice a charming quality. I would also like to see her critics try to play the harp one one thousandth as well. Some of the finger work is very intricate yet flawless.

  • Thank you for posting a "clean version" of this exceptional song. Those who are dissing Johanna would probably diss people with speech impediments to their faces as well. Johanna is actually more intellectually brilliant than any of her detractors will ever be . She wrote the song and performs it. With impediment in place. This is when she was younger. She is exceedingly brave.

  • @trilobright If you really listened to the words and related it to what you know from the wide span of all you have read of philosophy and understood the references she is making you might have a very different outlook. but that would take some thought.

  • It sounds like a retarded preschooler reading the poetry of a self-important middle schooler.

  • All her songs make me feel like I'm dreaming and not in any kind of sappy or figurative way and certainly not in a bad way. But yeah when I hear it I actually feel like I'm dreaming. Maybe its just the harp.

  • this song is similar to the them from willow for nes

  • open a new youtube tab , look up rainymood and play these together , its fantastic
