Same thing happened to me with a 20lb striper. Hook came out and rod whipped back into a branch. Good thing for the warranty and the fish.

May be the rod was bad quality, Chinese made, a 30 $ rod. Next time buy a Shimano, a Daiwa or a Hardy rod.
