Nick follows us home just to make sure we get home safely. I get out the car carrying Nicky and look over into Nicks car.
"Mom, can you take Nicky inside for me?" I ask.
"Sure, honey," she replies," Watch it with that one."
"I will, thanks," I kiss Nicky's cheek.
I wait for them to go inside and turn to Nick's car. I slowly make my way to the passenger side and peek through the window.
"Thanks," I smile.
"No problem," he nods.
"Do you want to come in, for coffee or something?" I nervously ask.
"Really? Sure," he smiles.
Nick steps out the car and walks by my side into the house where he sits at the kitchen table.
"Coffee?" I ask.
"Yeah, thanks," he grins.
After I serve him his coffee, I sit across him on the kitchen table. I watch him as he sips his coffee then he says, "What's wrong?"
"Can I show you something?" I ask.
"Yeah," he replies.
"Ok, wait on the couch. Ill be right back," I tell him.
Nick walks out the kitchen and into the living room. He rests himself on the couch as I walk up the stairs. I pull out the box of memories I've been saving out from my closet and carry it downstairs.
"What's that?" he asks.
"Something I've been wanting to give you for a long time," I say nervously.
I hand him the box and he opens it. He slowly runs his fingers through all the letters filed neatly inside of it.
"They're in order," I say.
"Can I read them?" he asks.
"Yeah," I bite my lip.
He goes through letter after letter and picture after picture, wiping stray tears off his cheeks. He gets to a yellow envelope and pulls it out. He opens it a takes out the DVD. I take it from him and put it in the DVD player then sit back down next to him. He watches as I help Nicole unwrap her presents on her first Christmas. Tears stream down his face as she hops impatiently on her butt waiting to open another present. He laughs as she laughs when she rips the wrapping paper. After the DVD is done he looks over at me.
"There's more," I say.
He continues to read more letters until he gets to another DVD. I pop the DVD into the player and sit back down. The movie starts and it's Nicole making a mess out of her baby food. The sight of her face covered in food makes him smile widely. He hears my voice calling out for Nicky to say "Mama." Nicky smiles, showing her two front teeth, then says "Dada!"
"She said Dada!" Nick says excitedly.
"Yup, her first word," I say.
The video continues to play, showing an upset Nicky now.
"She was mad because she wanted the camera," I fill him in.
"She's stubborn," he smiles.
"Like you," I laugh.
"Like you too," he laughs.
I grab another video out of the box. It's the video of Nickys' first steps. He watches attentively, jumping out of his seat every time she falls and calling out for her to walk. I smile as I watch him, his smile still makes me melt.
"I missed you," I whisper.
He looks over at me.
