In 1902, Frank Lloyd Wright was commissioned to undertake the design and construction of a massive renovation of the Lawrence family home in Springfield, Illinois. The home was to be more than a mere residence -- it was to be a showcase. Upon its completion in 1904, the new edifice completely engulfed the original home. It immediately became a symbol of artistic and architectural excellence. It now stands as the finest example of the creativity and uniqueness characteristic of the Prairie School of Architecture." From Governor James R. Thompson's Executive Order August 23, 1983

He didn't follow Japanese influence to a " T " but he stayed RELATIVELY faithful to them.

Usonian houses - There's one in Florence, AL, that's now a historical site. ( Rosenbaum house )

  • The shared wide eaves are due to rational drainage handling, plus light & heat efficiency advantages. Steel explains lack of corner carved trussinng. But foundations different: Wright very heavy, Japanese very light. Also: horizondtal single-building emphasis got Wright in trouble - only rich could built that single-story big. After '29 crash he had hard time making "Usonian" as good for middle-class multi-units. They started going to Corbusier "Habitat" concept.

Interesting how he went from standard, established architecture to such innovative ideas applied to Western architecture derived from Japanese concepts.

I corresponded w / someone who lived near the Usonian Rosenbaum house in Alabama years ago.

  • Not only the upturned roof corners, but other features like the "floating roof" & especially the Richerdson neo-gothic Arch simplified, make the whole building Art Decco - 12 years before the style officially originated.

  • That's the Japanese influence in FLW's houses. Impressive.

  • My God: It looks like the Imperial Palace in Beijing! Awesome - I can almost TASTE those copper sculpted mouldings! Wouldn't it be a great place to Exhibit Dix & Grosz Expressionist paintings?

  • Nice to see it in a video. Thanks

  • i just went there today :]

  • my eighth grade year we took a trip here and got to take a tour through it, its a beautiful home and its giant lol.
