The damper frame is mortared in place. To replace the damper frame usually requires disassembling the upper firebox. Replacement dampers & frames are available from your local masonry supply or chimney sweep. Top sealing dampers are an excellent choice even in situations where the damper & frame are intact.

How is the damper frame typically installed? With some kind of adhesive or is it just gravity that holds it there? My frame is rusted out along the bottom (frame, not the flap) and I want to put another one in, not a chimney top damper. Is that possible?
