What Can You Do About the Farm Bill

Though this interview was conducted in 2007, and pertains specifically to the previous Farm Bill of that year, the next Farm Bill is coming up in 2012. Much of what Dan Imhoff says in this video equally applies to the upcoming Farm Bill legislation of 2012. Many of us don't pay close attention to pending federal legislation but most food experts agree, this bill is the most important legislation on the federal docket.

Doesn't the farm bill also contain a clause allowing corporations to continue putting GMO in foods w/o having to prove that they're actually safe to eat? A federal judge recently ordered the discontinued use of GMO unless corporations (ie. Monsanto) could prove their safety. Corporations then had their lackeys (congress men/women) to include this provision to allow them to continue issuing GMO foods to the public w/o having to verify their safety. Correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks.

I think you are referring to the upcoming House appropriations bill where a rider was attached that would prevent the courts from issuing an injunction to prevent farmers from planting GMO crops while the USDA conducts further environmental reviews. What seems to be problematic here, the rider was buried inside the bill, and in effect, would nullify the important role the judiciary in this country sometimes is forced to play.

Thanks for the info. But, I'd be a lot more confident in the FDA's ability to do their job, if there weren't a revolving door between FDA officials and the companies they police. Congress/Senators receive $millions in contributions, and jobs once they leave office, from the companies that they regulate. Same with the FDA. Heck, Obama's Chief of Safety is ex-Vice President of Monsanto. Yeah, I have a lot of confidence in officials to police these companies... yeah right.

Any GMO trait has to be approved by the FDA, believe me, they don't just greenlight all of it, there is alot that must be proven before it is ever given regulartory approval. Tell me this, which is worse, having non GMO crops and farmers applying insecticide to try to prevent loss of crop quality, and yield, or to have a NATURALLY ocurring bacteria inserted into the plant genome to eliminate the bugs feeding on the plants, the Bt toxoid, which is also used in organic farming.
