i do not remember what my mom used to read me... but she used to read something! so i guess the best tip for bedtime reading here was "whatever i am reading" :D the voice matters, dude, the voice!

All time fav. "My Goodnight Book" (1981) Few short phrases, both my kids knew all the words before they were 2.
Little Golden Books "The Sleepy Book" Makes me yawn every time, works on kids too :)
"Ten in the Bed" Another good one for small children, they can read along.
Mother Goose is great as well, you can read two rhymes when time is tight, or 20 rhymes when you have a bit more time!
(Little Nutbrown hair is great as well!)

Woo Hoo...
I make up a story every night too... Sometimes my stories are 15 minutes long with long drawn out themes, other times they are two minutes long and I introduce the character (with my children's names) and then they live happily ever after, those are the nights I have a lot of homework!!
My kids love hearing their names involved in a creative story and my 3 year old now makes up stories all day long!
We do read on the couch before we start our bedtime routine every night though.

pointless. takes more time to put it together than the 3 minutes to watch a little video. just have them watch it with you

well i work with one year olds all the time they like walkers but they like to play with every thing so if you want to look away for a few minutes to use the bathroom or some thing put them in a saucer for a few minutes they like them best because they have a lot of toys to play with on thier for them good luck

I try to read a different book every night. I don't want to have to go out and buy another copy of a book I lost, because they were attached to it. It also, and this is the real reason here, helps build vocabulary. Right now we're reading a book of short stories.
