The St. Stephen's Chamber Ensemble from Phoenix, AZ performs Reger's Serenade for Winds at a concert at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Phoenix. This is a new group committed to presenting little performed works for chamber wind ensemble. The Ensemble is directed by William A. Smith, a Phoenix area music educator and conductor. Comprised of professional and serious amateur musicians, it is sponsored by St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Phoenix. The Ensemble will present its next concert at Trinity Cathedral on Sunday, March 29th -- that program will include works by Hindemith, Arthur Bird, Strauss and Dvorak.
In my opinion, I felt as though this piece was sensitively directed and performed. I've never heard of the composer; it's not my favorite work. Sometimes I thought the sound was a little muddled, but that may have been the video or the piece itself. I, personally, like how secondary melodic lines were explored in the work; I find that to be important in many pieces of music. I really like that the purpose of the ensemble is to perform little performed/known works. I want to hear more :D.

Thanks! The Cathedral we perform at is the culprit; the acoustics are great, but VERY live, and made this piece a bit too intricate. Max Reger was a contemporary of Mahler's and LOVED counterpoint, perhaps too much -- check out some of his piano and organ works. Anyway, our next performance will be March 29th, and I'll be posting selections the beginning of April. Let's keep in touch!

No problem :). I really enjoyed the performance. I see; yeah, that can be difficult to work through. I really enjoy contrapuntal type pieces; a lot of my own music is contrapuntal in nature. What are you in this ensemble? I am excited to hear more of the music you guys perform.
