Jupiter

I came across some pond scum at the base of a small waterfall near my workplace, and was immediately struck by how beautiful it was. It reminded my of the planet, Jupiter, and seemed to me a metaphor for the primordial ooze from which life sprang.
I videotaped the pond scum and projected it onto a 7-foot weather balloon as a video art installation in the Sculpture Garden at Maxwell Fine Arts for Peekskill Project 08 on September 13, 2008. The soundtrack was composed of actual sounds from the planet Jupiter downloaded from NASA's web-site (radio frequency sounds down-pitched by a factor of nine to bring them into the human hearing range), and I did some live ambient synth noodling to it. I also had a smoke machine for the live performance providing additional atmosphere. The video I shot during the event came out disappointing, with the "planet" overexposed and lacking detail. For this YouTube version I just took the source video and added the Zoom In/Zoom Out effects at the beginning and end. The pond scum video footage was edited and processed in iMovie HD, utilizing mostly Brightness/Contrast and Color Correction, as well as Slow Motion. Nice effect. Amazing how something so small as scum in water can resemble something so massive. In a way it looks more like Venus.
