The Horrors at Summer Sonic 2009, Japan

The Horrors talk to NME.com backstage at Summer Sonic 2009 near Tokyo, Japan. We chatted in the hospitality area shortly before their set on the Sonic Stage, where they mostly played songs from 'Primary Colours'.

So, could you tell me where you are and what you're up to?

We're in Japan at Summer Sonic. Were about to play in a couple of hours.

And what have you got lined up for your set?

Some of our songs, probably.

Any surprises for the Japanese crowd?

Er... Yeah. Loads of surprises.

Are you gonna give any away?

No.

Thats what makes it a surprise, you see.

What do you think of Summer Sonic festival?

Its probably the best crowd you could ever get. Its really insane how people respond to us here."

Do you get a different reception from Japanese crowds?

"I think everyone probably gets a different reception from Japanese crowds. We certainly appreciate it, anyway.

Are you going to see any other bands at the festival?

We have to go straight to Osaka tonight, but hopefully tomorrow well have a chance to see some bands.

Im gonna go to watch The Tom Tom Club.

Oh, The Vaselines are playing as well, arent they? Id like to see them.

Have you played any other festivals here, like Fuji Rock?

No, we havent, but we want to.

Will you have a chance to look around in Osaka?

Me and Josh yesterday went to Shimokitazawa. Thats probably the wrong pronunciation. We spent a good day walking around and then got caught in the heaviest rain Ive ever experienced. That was excellent. I like the Japanese weather.

How would you describe Shimokitazawa?

Erm, its a vibrant place full of opportunities.

Whats the plan after this? Checking out the hospitality, or going straight on stage?

We have to go to Osaka fairly soon. Hopefully well get a bit more time to relax there."

Any final message for NME.com?

"Awesome power."
