Hello on this Monday, the 25 day of February 2008. I'm Kristin Volk with your UPI Headline update.

Consumer advocate Ralph Nader says he's running for president again. This run would be Nader's fifth consecutive bid for the White House. Many Democrats fear that Nader could draw votes from whoever gets the party's nomination. That move could help the nearly-cemented Republican nominee John McCain win the White House in November.

Meanwhile, Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama traded sharp words over trade this weekend while campaigning in Ohio. The rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination have blamed trade agreements for the loss of manufacturing jobs. Clinton accused the Illinois senator of misrepresenting her record on the North American Free Trade Agreement. The New York Senator has said she's hesitant about NAFTA, blaming countries for shipping jobs overseas. But, Obama accused the New York Senator for supporting NAFTA when her husband was president.

The brother of former Cuban president Fidel Castro is the new president of the communist country. Raul Castro took to his post yesterday after running Cuba's military for at least 50 years. The news came five days after the 81-year-old elder announced his resignation, citing his critical health condition.

Classes are resuming today at Northern Illinois University where six students were killed nearly two weeks ago. But there won't be any meetings in Cole Hall this semester where a gunman burst in and shot five students before taking his own life. Officials haven't decided what to do about the building yet. Since the incident, memorial services have been held to honor the slain and the 16 others who were wounded.

That's all for now. Check out our new special segment called "They Got Game Again" on upi.com. Thanks for watching.

  • The only reason Ralph Nader has ever run is not because he thinks he can become president. He uses the opportunity to bring up issues which SHOULD be addressed by political candidates, but ARE NOT. Until heard John Edwards, Nader was the only major public figure who used plain talk to explain the ways in which mega-corporations have screwed over our economy and taken over our political system. He's not a spoiler, he's a protest vehicle. I've voted for him. Better to vote than do nothing.

  • Nader never told anyone to vote Republican at the end of his campaigns. So... fairly intelligent? Uh... yeah.

  • very kind. Unfortunately you are overestimating the inteligence of the vast majority of Americans. Only freethinkers flock towards Nader campaign, and there are few and far in between.

    11.4.08

Nader won over all 3rd party and independents.

So if you count only NON-CORPORATE Candidates. NADER is our president.

However, Corporations OWN Washington (We have the best Democracy Money can buy) - and the president elect and also the candidate wo recieved most Corporate lobby money - Obama.

  • ma-b if the security had a gun no one would have died!

  • every time I hear about shootings...my little teeny tiny voice inside tells me its a step towards gun control ...disarm everyone exept the police and militery...hmmm just a thought and I am in the UK

  • "Draw votes away."

Hell, I think he can win. Why would he only receive Democratic votes? I think Republicans who hate McCain would register Independent (if they have to, to vote for Nader in the general election) and vote for him - you know, if McCain's still in the race. Gotta love the FEC.

  • im quoting jesuisque- mega-corporations have screwed over our economy and taken over our political system. who is the victim? Hard working americans, thats who. people who have to work 2 jobs just to make ends meet and still cant afford health care. And americans trying to earn a living by joining the military who are in iraq fighting. so sell me another stress prescription corporate america, cause i cant believe what my hard earned tax money is being used for
