Quicksilver Messenger Service with the title track from the album Shady Grove, featuring the extraordinary guitar work of John Cipollina, and keyboards by the influential Nicky Hopkins, both passed, RIP.

The yellow video playing along with the audio is, uh, oh, some old psychedelic thing, a sub genre from a band probably long forgotten, they were called Sgt. Marine or something like that, I think, one of the songs of theirs that got FM radio airplay was about smoking beatles or roaches or peppers or something like that to get high...

This is a revision of the original, hurried video, intended as a test of stereo sound on YouTube. (you had to reduce the video bit rate and upload as a stereo .flv back in those days to sneek past yootoob video post upload processing - all while the original was kept in storage, can you imagine?)

Anyway, for better video and stereo sound see my upload of Shady Grove at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgB5vzHCTws

Support the music!

The audio CD "Shady Grove" is available and can be found on Amazon or Ebay.

Or hear it live in concert! Gary & David put on a hell of a show!

True concert footage of Quicksilver Messenger Service remains rare, and any hardcore fan of the band will want to get the limited edition 3 DVD set "Recoil" which includes never before seen video (seen by me anyway) of Quicksilver Messenger Service live in concert! A truly bitchin' extended psychedelic version of Who Do You Love is my personal fave! Watching the duel lead guitars of John Cipollina and Gary Duncan is something to see!

anyway, get "Recoil" here while it's still available

  • MinniMoose: Can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not. Hope so, as only a complete idiot prefers the pretentious, Dino-ego-driven crap of the post Freigerg/Hopkins Valenti years. Rubbish indeed...

  • now, now. Let's not resort to name calling, eh?

    :)

  • Folks, we're having a little problem with pests. Please ignore them and I will continue to delete them daily.

  • Who's take a lead vocal on this song

  • @Sansana

David Freiberg does the lead vocal.

One of his best studio QMS efforts IMHO

    :)

  • lol! you, or the video?

    :D

  • I was 18 when I saw QMS with Nicky Hopkins play this song, at a concert that also had the Grateful Dead and Savoy Brown and the Byrds....It started snowing outside the venue, and the doors were opened and a bunch of ticketless folks joined us...wow this is a great song. I'm proud of our young people today. Each generation makes its music, but every generation can leave a legacy for the next to enjoy. Kudos one and all, and Peace Brothers and Sisters Old and Young from NZ.

  • Yeah, happier than a wedding where the ride just got killed in a limo on the wasy in. . .

(in response to 6749er below. . .whom I know is being absurd on purpose. Dino Valenti--what a turd!)

  • Great song--thanks!

I just read a fascinating book: And On Piano...Nicky Hopkins--The Extraordinary Life of Rock's Greatest Session Man, by Julian Dawson.

As soon as I finished the book, I fired up YouTube to search for Nicky Hopkins material. The first song I played was "She's (Like) a Rainbow" by the Rolling Stones, always one of my favorites of theirs--simply because of the enchanting piano. Should have known all along it was NH, who died too d@mn young. ::Sigh::

  • That's It?

  • Great vid... There is no better QMS than the one w/ Nicky Hopkins, Shady Grove being their best and best one w/ Nicky Hopkins. The others are good but don't compare to the ones w/ the addition of Nicky Hopkins IMO. Cipollina's guitar at its best. Also, might I add, that Nick Gravenites also contributed alot to this record. Another reason its also so great is because Dan Healy was involved... A really great sound engineer who also worked alot w/ The Grateful Dead... X) SHADY GROVE MY HONEY !!! (X

  • @colfaxprof Ego? Pretention? so your ego tells you what others should prefer? and your pretention tells you you are all omniscient! Who's the idiot? Step on down from your high horse and come join the rest of us simple folk. peace y'all.

  • @colfaxprof

    LOL

    nice

  • @maxxz7 Keep your audio cassette head clean and demagnitized, "Maxxz"... I'm pret' near 60 meself, and believe it after whitewater rafting three days... Shady Grove by QMS/Cipolina, live at the Dog on the Beach or Fillmore, or Winterland/Avalon Ballroom was a rare treat... here's to you, you fine old hipster, and to hippie chicks!!!!

  • Iam 62 and have been listening to "Shady Grove" since it came out. I listen to it from a cassette tape that I copied from the original vinyl record thats how fucking out of it Iam......but it still sounds great. As a previous poster has already stated John Cipollina guitar sounds are haunting and never leave you..................
