Lonely Planet: Working Holiday at Napperby Cattle Station, Outback Australia

Your skills can be put to good use in the Northern Territory's Outback. A boilermaker in Germany, Martin Tashenmacher avoided the cities when he planned his Australian working holiday and found himself working at Napperby Station near Alice Springs, in the centre of Australia.

Whether in the workshop building cattle yards or outside working the herd, his days are a mix of dust, the clang of steel, adrenalin and good, honest hard work with salt of the earth people.

Take a look at Martin's temporary home, where he lives "an adventure every day", and experience a side of Australia that few tourists get to see.

I'm planning on doing a 462 visa for Americans, the "work and holiday" visa for my gap year next year when I graduate from nursing school. I wonder if my nursing skills will be able to be put to good use in Australia's remote communities, especially with the Aborigines?

I hope I can. I would really love to put my skills into good use as a woking holiday traveler.
