Amanda Knox is an American woman convicted in the brutal November 2007 sexual assault and stabbing death of her British roommate, Meredith Kercher. At the time Kercher was killed, the 20-year-old Knox was a student at the University of Washington, who was studying abroad in Italy. Two years after Kercher's murder, on December 5, 2009, Knox was convicted of the killing and sentenced to 26-years behind bars. Knox's Italian boyfriend, Rafaelle Sollecito, was also convicted in the case, along with another man. Reports published shortly after the murder said Kercher was allegedly killed "for refusing to take part in a violent orgy."
In the years since her conviction, Knox's attorneys have argued that DNA used to convict their client of Kercher's murder was "contaminated," and that the DNA results were "inconclusive." According to ABC News, the defense claims key DNA evidence wasn't collected from the crime scene until six weeks after Kercher's murder. In December of 2010, an Italian appeals court judge ordered that the DNA evidence in the case be "re-examined," a process which was expected to take several months.
A Lifetime movie about the Knox case, entitled "Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy," is set to premiere on the network on February 21, 2011. The movie stars Hayden Panettiere as Knox and Marcia Gay Harden as Knox's mother. In early-February of 2011, Meredith Kercher's mom spoke out against the film, which includes scenes showing her daughter's assault and murder. According to Sky News, Arline Kercher called the film "shocking," and added that she didn't understand why the Lifetime movie is airing when Knox's appeal is pending. Kercher's father, John Kercher, is quoted by The Sun as saying that the movie is "extremely distressing."
Amanda Knox's family members have also voiced their opposition to the Lifetime movie. On February 5, 2011, The Sun quoted Knox's stepfather, Chris Mellas, as saying the family has issued a formal "complaint against Lifetime." Mellas called the movie "ill-timed and inappropriate in many ways," adding that the family has "no other choice but to protest its airing."
