On Thursday, 9th April 2009 Nigerians gathered to protest televised comments by their ambassador, Dr Kema Chikwe, denying the reality of female genital mutilation (FGM) in the country. She made the claims on RTE's 'Would You Believe' - www.rte.ie/tv/wouldyoubelieve - despite being confronted with data from Amnesty International and official Nigerian submissions to the UN that the practice of FGM remains widespread. Protesters argued that her intervention in the high-profile Pamela Izevbekhai asylum case was utterly lacking in credibility, brought discredit on Nigeria and called for her to resign. The video begins with spokeswoman for the protesters, Uche Odinukwe of Cork Anti-Racism Network.
