To suggest a given exercise is functional is suggesting that it is 'functional' for everybody, which is simply not true! For example, a pitcher would require much more transverse plane load to the SA compared to a power lifter who would require far more sagittal and frontal plane load. The SA 'functional' exercise protocol for a pitcher and a power lifter would be very different determined by the individual function!
I hope this has made my point more clear. Thanks for asking!

My point wasn't to say this was a bad exercise I just wanted to highlight that it was naive to suggest this is a 'functional' SA exercise. A functional exercise in the purest sense does not exist without individual characteristics being accounted for.

It depends on the persons disfunction and ultimate goal. As the SA orginates from upper 8-9 rid and inserts to medial margin of scap we must first understand what planes will create eccentric load. The scap would load the the SA through depression, protraction & upward rotation (I think). However, loading the SA through these motions still would not be classed as functional before assessing what that persons function is. I picked up on this becuase people abuse the word 'function' far to aften!

What is an appropriate exercise to strengthen the SA through three planes of motion then?
