NORWEGIAN / NORSK:

min hyllest til The Monroes.
Dette er min hyllest til 1 av mine favoritter, popduoen The Monroes.

ENGLISH / ENGELSK:

my tribute to The Monroes.
This is my tribute to 1 of my favorites, the popduo The Monroes.

The Monroes - Cheerio

The Monroes was formed in 1982 by Lage Fosheim (vocals) and Eivind Rølles (vocals and guitars (+ percussion on their albums)).

Both from the Oslo-band Broadway News, who've had experienced some success between the years 1979-82.

Their debut album "Sunday People" was recorded in Silence Studio in Sweden the winter of '83.
Their first single, "Sunday People", was released in June '83, on Bahama Records. "Sunday People" was a huge success, it went to the top of the charts and stayed there several weeks. The song was also accompanied by Norway's first real music video. The album sold over 130.000 copies and stayed in the charts for months. They also won to Spellemannspriser that year, one of them "Årets Spellemann 83".

The duo's second video, for the song "Arabian Nights", was played in Marrakech, Morocco, in the fall of 1983.

In December '83 The Monroes signed a contract with EMI International i London. In the beginning of 1984 most of the time was spent promoting "Sunday People" internationally. In the fall of '84 The Monroes played a concert for Sky Channel in London, which was broadcasted all over Europe.

The summer, 1985 they released the first single from the new album "Face Another Day". "Cheerio" was an even bigger hit that "Sunday People", and the expectations for the new album was sky high.
And the boys didn't disappoint. The album, which was recorded in London and Paris, and sold more than "Sunday People" did. Songs like "Jeanette", "Lady On 5th Avenue", "Cheerio" and "Let's Go" was played on the radio all through '85 and '86. "Face..." sold more 250.000 copies in Norway, and this time The Monroes sold records outside of Norway as well, in Sweden, Germany, France, Portugal and Spain. "Face..." was also nominated for Album Of The Year at Spellemannsprisen.

In 1987 The Monroes went to USA, to work with the a couple of members from E-Street Band. The result was the album "Everything's Forgiven". Not quite as successful as the two previous, but the single "I Call It Love" made it to number two in the charts.
After that, the duo visited Germany, Holland and Belgium, and participated in several tv-shows.

At the end of 1987, the duo decided to take a break, exhausted as they were after 5 years non-stop work.
This break lasted six years.

In 1993 they were back in business, with a new Monroes song: "Just Another Normal Day".

With this they were back in the charts, and the song was one of the most played songs on radio that year.

The new album "The Long Way Home" was accompanied by a new hit "The Sun Goes Up" and a documentary program on the Norwegian tv-channel NRK.

Later that same year EVA Records relased "Absolute Monroes", a collection of their biggest hits.

...to be continued...

In 2005 The Monroes and Ravi & Dj Løv made a remix of Cheerio together, naming it "Tsjeriåu".

In the summer 2008 The Monroes performed live on a Norwegian TV show (that goes on summer on every Thurday) called "Allsang på Grensen" at Fredriksten Fortress (Frediksten festning) in Halden.

  • Usually I despise Pop-music. This isnt pop music, but its easy listening. Pop is moneymaking, this is Art! I love this song. Its probably not a coincidence that, when Ravi chose to make a tribute to this song, the church was the setting in the music video, as Cheerio clearly echoes a touch of Bach´s choral works. You especially hear it in the way the fretless bass play the scales. Great lead guitar solo by marius múller, and whoever played the bass did a great job.I like Lage Fosheim´s accent

  • super god sang, der overlever.

  • Best ever!!!! love it.
