Part 4 starts at the end of our pelagic trip, then moves on to a brief stop at Huacarpay Lake before heading to Manu Road. Our first stop along the road was Paucartambo, then we climbed to 3600m over the highest pass, through some elfin forest and on towards Pilhuatta.
On the pelagic we have a large colony of Peruvian boobies, followed by a huge South American sea lion colony, a red-legged cormorant and then a mix of Peruvian pelicans kelp gulls and Inca terns. At Huacarpay Lake there are lots of distant Andean coot and common moorhen, and a greenish yellow-finch. Around Paucartambo we have creamy-crested spinetail, golden-billed saltator, chiguanco thrush and white-winged black-chat. At high altitude we have great sapphirewing, calling diademed tapaculo and hooded mountain-tanager. In the elfin forest above Pilhuatta, we have broad-winged hawk and rufous-breasted chat-tyrant. Further along the road we have scarlet-bellied mountain-tanager, plush-capped finch and barred fruiteater. At Pilhuatta we have a very brief red-and-white antpitta, Blackburnian warbler and masked trogon.
The trip was organised by Gunnar Engblom of www.kolibriexpeditions.com based in Lima, Peru.
