Why not just do a base conversion on the url_id column? It would save you from having to generate random codes and having to check for duplicates. Much more robust, I'd say.
@harryrockths Not true, they aren't doubled because "a" isn't equal to "A", if you doubled the numbers "1" is still equal to "1" because there is not lower and upper case. "a" isn't equal to "A" because it's case sensitive.
just a thought but in the charset letters have double the chance of appearing so if you entered each number twice as well this would even out the odds a bit
