A Common Wombat (Vombatus ursinus) in the wild, not far from Queanbeyan N.S.W (just outside Canberra), going about its business - eating and walking around in the cool evening.
Two wombats were seen in this area the night before this filming, so I believe the wombat at the end of the video (taken on the following night), is actually the other wombat due to it having different scars and markings (distant footage, so hard to make out).

  • You are so lucky to get so many different kinds of wildlife out there in Aussie land, alot more to what we get here in the cold UK lol,5*

  • I am still worried about these and all wombats here. So many are hit by cars and killed each year. At certain times of year around this part of Australia along the country roads you see so many dead one. And they only breed one wombat every year or two, so with the rate of deaths - it is a worry. They are also planning to build a new bypass need these guys (in the video) in years to come. Anyway I hope to get some more footage of them (and I did recently) when I can.

  • When I visited Narawntapu National Park, Tasmania on September of 2007 I was 3m away from the Wombat. As I got closer the Wombat just looked at me and went backt to eating each time. After the 3m point I stopped out of respect for the Wombat. I was so close that a fully zoomed camera was not practical. To put it in a nutshell I was blessed!

  • Thanks for your comment. Have been to Tasmania also for a holiday years ago, and twice last year for work - but only Hobart and Launceston. Have never seen a wombat there. Hope you got some nice photos of the wombat you saw. Was it a dark coloured one? I seem to remember reading that Tassie wombats are generally darker coloured and bigger of body than the mainland ones on average. I followed your link to the "Tassie in Spring" video, nice and relaxing. I enjoyed it.

  • I looked at my framed picture of the Common Wombat on the wall and it is dark gray. It was definitely a good sized Wombat. That wombat was east of Devonport. I was told by my Tour Guide's son that people normally don't get within 60 feet of a Wombat. I saw several other parts of Tassie and I want to go back and see more. You are most likely aware that there is much to see in that beautiful little island.

  • Yes, Tasmania is a beautiful part of Australia and the food (especially seafood) and wine are certainly of excellent quality there. The wild areas in the west and the rain-forests are superb.

If you do come back to Australia one day, Kangaroo Island is another really interesting and scenic place to consider. It is off South Australia, just down from Adelaide. I think from memory about an hour ferry trip.

  • WOMBATS ARE SOOOOOOOOO CUTEeee

  • Thanks, HungryFrog3. Thought you would like to see a "real" live one in the bush. We were very excited to find it. Have seen it several times now, but when we went back the other day, could not find it, but of course they have a large range that they feed in, so we were probably just looking in the wrong spot.

  • that was great=)
