Make sure to know that it isn't really "ink in water", it's just smoke.

I love the title ... what you read is what you get: a red ball in inky water :)

can we create car burnout smoke with realflow? I'm a Maya user and not 3ds Max, so I can't use FumeFX.

I really dont recommend RealFlow for any smokellike simulations. This was just a test to show that it is possible. But: Takes a LONG time, is not very flexible and the rendering is not funny. If u use maya, why dont u use Maya Fluids? They are one of the best fluid tools available??

@DragonsSpirit Thanks a lot for your advice. I'm working on this short animation in which I have some cars burnout. I've checked the burnouts created by Maya fluids, and it's no where near Fume FX. This makes me think maybe I better learn a bit of Max and Fume FX for that purpose. What do you think?

I think if you think that you can learn FumeFX in Max so fast, then stick to it. Maya fluids can create the same results. It is not slow, and its quality is in my opinion not lower but the control might be a little more tricky than in fume. Also, if you learn Max and FumeFX, you have a very powerful basis for pyroFX and other stuff when you also learn krakatoa and PFlow in Max.
In short: Mayas fluids WILL deliver for sure. Max+Fume+Krakatoa almost unbeatable toolset.

U gotta know it man...check it out. Just google "Krakatoa" in combination with 3DS Max or Prime Focus.
It is a rendering tool for particles...the best u can get.
