White House to shelve Europe missile defence plan, reports newspaper

The United States will abandon plans for a missile-defence system in Poland and the Czech Republic, proposed by the Bush administration, Czech Prime Minister Jan Fischer told reporters on Thursday.

I guess I would say you are right "IF" the whole world wants peace. Last thing that happened was in Georgia - Over taken by Russia. Not exactly what I would call peaceful, to monopolize energy to Europe. And when was the last time you saw peaceful comments coming out of Iran? This shield was supposed to help protect our allies from threats to them. I truly believe it still is needed there, and can't understand why we'd "sell" those countries for a stupid deal between Russia and GE.

lauran08: If the whole world wants peace then we have to stop antagonising each other. I really think that having missile defence in Poland and Czech would have made those two countries possible targets which is not fair for the people of those countries. Russia does have to stop intimidating the countries that border her, and I think Obamas gesture is a start to talks regarding this issue and many others. Also Iran is unstable and not a threat to the US which this gesture clearly shows!

Russia is correct on this why do we need to protect the East Europeans when they talk smack on us anyways. The U.S needs to protect itself more than anything. Oh if we ever go to war with Russia it's sad but it would be good if it only was the U.S and Russia but they would bring the world to their knees as they each would invade smaller countries to fight each other. The U.S is way too powerfull militarly and Russia still has Soviet era capablities so the world looses, not them.
