Peaking around 1906 Manchester, UK became the "cottonopolis" of northern England. The climate was ideal for spinning cotton (damp) and hundreds of spinning and weaving mills were built in the late 1800's to meet the demand for cotton cloth. Manchester became the hub for commerce. Several warehouses to house and exhibit finished goods were built in the city centre. A lot were destroyed in the blitz of 1939-1945 but a few remain. The most elegant is the J&S Watts building on Portland street. With 7 different types of architecture on each floor of the warehouse. It almost was demolished but finally saved and is now the Britannia hotel. Several other magnificent buildings have been converted into hotels or business premises. This video takes a look aroung the city centre of Manchester and examines some of these building and warehouses and other buildings built to echo the boom in the new commerce - banks, finance houses, churches and colleges. Also included are some of the earlier types of spinning frames, hand and power looms of the early 19th century. Most mills were originally water powered but steam became the main driving force. Several mill engines are also included. Filmed with the Panasonic FZ150 camera in 1920HD

  • @mrrandom177 Hi, watched the vid, I like the camera rig on the quad bike - that would be a great build! I couldn't begin to think how much that "set" costs with all those cars, extras, lighting etc etc. Nice footage from the TZ10

  • Some great shots here graham. The old mills around the Northern quater are Possibly my faveroute part of Manchester. Are you aware some of the street scenes from the recent Captain America film were shot around the corner from your Northeren Quater shots? check my Captain America on set in Manchester UK video.
