GIANT Christmas cactus

Christmas cactus, also known as Orchid Cactus, is a great gift idea on Christmas eve when in full bloom. @gardenlady45 ive never repotted this plant and it has to be at least 10 yrs old. i think its big enough as it is and its seems to be doing fine. if it showed signs of dying i guess i would consider repotting

That is the Thanksgiving Cactus (Schlumbergera truncata), not the Christmas Cactus or the Easter Cactus (Rhipsalidopsis).

I have this plant, but I live in the tropics. Do they need winter to flower?

Christmas and Easter cactus are easy to care for. They love to be root bound, so smaller pots are ideal. Soil needs to be able to drain extremely well, the plant can hold what water it wants in it's root mesh and store it in its stems. Soil is not the place for water to dwell with these plants. Pinch the stems( remove last leaves) once they start getting long, this will encourage the plant to fill out instead of growing long and thin. You'll notice this plant is the same length all around.

mine nearly died over the winter cause i failed at watering it LOL but its back up to life now, small though, id say 4 leaves in length

i had a christmas cactus 2 times bigger but it died. :( it was my grandparents it was 100 years old.

i really like that flower color.. one of ours is growing in a 14 inch pot and last time i measured it, it was about 45 inches across (it weighs a TON hahaha)
