Christmas cactus, also known as Orchid Cactus, is a great gift idea on Christmas eve when in full bloom. Christmas cactus is a popular, winter-flowering houseplant native to Brazil. pendulous stems of Christmas cactus make it a great choice for hanging baskets. A beautiful holiday plant, the Christmas Cactus (botanically known as Schlumbergera or Zygocactus) blooms at Christmas time if cared for properly. A month prior to Christmas, you will be able to watch the tips of the leaves beginning to grow. The tips grow darker as each day passes, until a bud forms. At Christmas time, as if by magic, the buds open to a beautiful flower that will add color and warmth to any holiday season.

  • Do you keep putting it in a bigger pot every year?

  • @gardenlady45 ive never repotted this plant and it has to be at least 10 yrs old. i think its big enough as it is and its seems to be doing fine. if it showed signs of dying i guess i would consider repotting

  • damn this is huge and full. how do i get them to grow more? and how do i get them to bloom at a younger or shorter stage?

  • i have no secrets, just water and love

  • That is the Thanksgiving Cactus (Schlumbergera truncata), not the Christmas Cactus or the Easter Cactus (Rhipsalidopsis).

  • I have this plant, but I live in the tropics. Do they need winter to flower?

  • Christmas and Easter cactus are easy to care for. They love to be root bound, so smaller pots are ideal. Soil needs to be able to drain extremely well, the plant can hold what water it wants in it's root mesh and store it in its stems. Soil is not the place for water to dwell with these plants. Pinch the stems( remove last leaves) once they start getting long, this will encourage the plant to fill out instead of growing long and thin. You'll notice this plant is the same length all around.

  • Do you know what the potting mix is for this cactus?

  • wow thats huge!

mine nearly died over the winter cause i failed at watering it LOL but its back up to life now, small though, id say 4 leaves in length

do u know how long they take to grow bigger?

  • Hey what Care things does it need?? For example sunlight requirements etc. Please answer. Thanks!

  • i had a christmas cactus 2 times bigger but it died. :( it was my grandparents it was 100 years old.

  • i really like that flower color.. one of ours is growing in a 14 inch pot and last time i measured it, it was about 45 inches across (it weighs a TON hahaha)
