Use Gloss/Semi Gloss poster board. you can get some of it at a local walmart and packs of 5-10 from office depot for ridiculously cheap like 5.99 or somthin and i personally use rust-o-leum its THE best for amatuer-pro moon art but if its your first time just try some 1$ dollar cans at walmart but you can tell the difference in productivity.

He's probably using semi gloss poster-board. you want something that is smooth and sleek so that it will not absorb the paint, and it will stay wet so you can manipulate it.
