NOAA's Okeanos Explorer mapped two seamount features- Seamount 109 and Hancock Seamount offshore of Southern California in March 2011. The NOAA Deep Coral Ecology Lab will use these data to explore for deep-sea corals using NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center's "high definition, high voltage" remotely operated vehicle to 600 meters depth in October 2011.

The project is part of ongoing collaboration between NOAA and Schmidt Ocean Institute to study the effects of climate change on deep-sea corals.
