Here PJ Proby sings a beautiful song by songwriter Sharon Sheeley. Sadly Sheeley today is mainly known as Eddie Cochran´s fiancee. But at the age of eighteen she wrote her first song, Rick Nelson´s Poor Little Fool, which reached No 1 in the US 1958!She wrote many songs together with Jackie DeShannon. She also recommended the young demosinger James Marcus Smith to use the name of a former boyfriend, PJ Proby -which Smith did!

So here PJ Proby (JM Smith!) sings one of Sheeley´s demos. The band is, as the singer himself, one of the greatest of all times:

Sax -Plas Johnson

Keys - Leon Russell

Bass - David Gates

Guitar - Glen Campbell

Drums -Hal Blaine

The year is around 1960-62.

  • What a great Song Writer She was so fantastic

    Thank you Sharon.

  • This is one great song and the other side of this 45 is just as good. I have thousands of 45's but I cannot think of another 45 release that had two sides that were so exceptional.

  • @roostertrigger

I agree. The song's too quirky.

  • Sharon't first song, Poor Little Fool, Rick Nelson's #1 hit, was written about her relationship with Don Everly. It was written after Don's brother, Phil Everly, told Sharon that Don was married. Sometimes, something creative comes from what is a heartache at the time. She was such a talent in her own right with many songs to her credit.

  • Holy Moley! Look at that line-up of studio aces! Yes, as a huge Jackie DeShannon fan, I am aware of the importance of Sharon Sheeley. All these great underrated artists. Thank goodness there are compilations available. That particular L.A. coterie, one of many -- Jackie DeShannon, PJ Proby, David Gates, Jack Nitzsche, Sonny Bono, Sharon Sheeley, it just boggles the mind.

  • Hard to believe Sharon Sheeley's been gone since 2002, passing at age 62. Besides Poor Little Fool, she and De Shannon wrote The Great Imposter for The Fleetwoods and Dum Dum for Brenda Lee. She was also married for 5 years to the TV emcee of ABC's Shindig, Jimmy O'Neill. Poor Little Fool was written by Sharon after her break-up with Don Everly.

  • Loved this song and great photo's of Sharon Sheeley.

She led the most exciting life a 50s/60s girl could have!!

  • Thanks for turning me on to Sharon Sheeley.

  • We'd like to post this video on our blog in early April when we post on SHARON SHEELEY... so many DEMO MAKERS including P.J. Proby, Bobby Darin, Glen Campbell, David Gates, and Leon Russel went on to have their own fame!
