Well, I think Smagin is actually a very good example of how you can fair with smoother and more relaxed style. Unfortunately for amateur category athleticism is on a higher priority now, but in professionals a more traditional approach that doesn't butcher technique or the feel of the dance for the sake of speed is encouraged. The fact that Smagin went straight into pro semifinals speaks for this.

@AceyBlade Very nice said. Ballroom Dancesport. Sometimes in competition or in practise i try to dance more sportive because i have to. If i woudln't compete then i would dance in a nice and smooth style. But now i don't have a choice.. if don't do it then i don't get a cross!!! :)

Well, masculine latin style vs. effeminiate ballet... Technique-wise they are not that far apart from each other. But, each to his own.
The issue with physical ability came when Bryan and Carmen retired and Michael and Joanna took over. The dance world always follows the one who's in top after all.
Anyway, the increased demand of physical ability can't be dismissed as entirely welcome. Why try to stick with Ballroom Dancing or Sport Dancing when you can have Ballroom Dancesport.

@AceyBlade Just Different opinions my friend. Matej was dancing many many comps that he deserved to win but he became a winner a long time after. Matej is Pure Technique that's all. That's why i love is dancing style. (that's why i choosed him to be my Trainer). We have to admit that dancing wen't in a really wrong direction in the last years. Couples are now trying to show their Physical condition. Here's where i don't agree with that. For me it's Ballroom dancing, not Sport Dancing.

What I said was a personal reference. Besides, it's not always the best dancers that win competitions.
It's a fact that Smagin is far more masculine than Matej. I would never ever want to dance with Matej's style.

Smagin > Matej even now, any day, any time.
Matej's dancing is more like ballet and unlatin, whereas Smagin is the embodiment of the ideal latin dancer.
