I'm collapsing the slider. It's what causes the canopy to open slower. If there was no slider, the canopy would open so quickly and harshly, that it would likely kill or seriously injure the jumper.
Collapsing it allows me to get rid of the noise of it flapping in the wind, but more importantly, to allow for some extra performance from the canopy. It allows the canopy to "flatten" out a bit, and gets that big slider (aka wind grabber) out of the wind to allow more forward speed.
