It's safer than a candle, true, but an electric nightlight can short out and cause an even more deadly fire since it would be smoldering, not flaming, and thus produce enough smoke to knock anyone out cold by the time the nightlight started to melt onto the carpet and start a flame which would give the smoke enough heat to finally set off the smoke detector.
