"Is the Roman Catholic doctrine of the Virgin Mary Biblical or not?" The Debaters: James White, Th.D., is director of ministries for Alpha & Omega Ministries, a Christian apologetics organization based in Phoenix, Arizona, & an adjunct professor with Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary's Arizona campus. He is also professor of apologetics with Columbia Evangelical Seminary, and a critical consultant for the Lockman Foundation on the New American Standard Bible update. James is a published author of many books including "Mary - Another Redeemer?" published by Bethany House Publishers. Robert Fastiggi, Ph.D. is professor of religious studies at Saint Edward's University in Austin, Texas. He is a published author & a Roman Catholic apologist. Mark Gunning is the moderator.

In his celebration of the Marian Year in Rome in 1950, Pope Pius XII accurately reflected the Roman Catholic Church's view of the Virgin Mary in his pontifical prayer: "Enraptured by the splendor of your heavenly beauty and impelled by the anxieties of the world, we cast ourselves into your arms, Oh Immaculate Mother of Jesus and our Mother. Mary ... we adore and praise the peerless richness of the sublime gifts with which God has lifted you above every other mere creature, from the moment of your conception until the day on which after your assumption into heaven, He crowned you Queen of the Universe. Oh crystal fountain of faith, bathe our minds with the eternal truths. Oh fragrant lily of all holiness, captivate our hearts with your heavenly perfume. Oh Conqueress of evil and death ... Receive, Oh sweet Mother, our humble supplications and above all, obtain for us that on that day, happy with you, we may repeat before your throne that hymn which is sung today around your altars. You are all beautiful Oh Mary. You are Glory, you are the Joy, you are the Honor of our people."

The Roman Church has elevated the Virgin Mary according to the following declarations:
1. Mary is the "Mother of God"
2. Mary had an "Immaculate Conception"
3. Mary has "Perpetual Virginity"
4. Mary is the "Co-Redemptrix & Mediatrix of All Graces"
5. Mary experienced "Assumption into Heaven"
6. Mary is the "Queen of Heaven"

Deuteronomy 5:7-9 states, "Thou shalt have none other gods before Me. Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the Lord am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate Me."

  • White is a moron, I'll take what the original church(Catholic) and all the early Church fathers teach over white anyday. This debate is evidence that Sola Scriptura cant be possible, the two participants cant even agree on the terms. Where does White get his infallibility from? Oh ya his interpretation!! from a book of which he would have no certainity of its devine inspiration not for Catholic Church

  • @billyboy630

Why not accept Coptic Christianity then? It is the earliest established Catholic church, long before Rome was even Christianized.

  • @smartwarlord

we do because copts ARE CATHOLIC as are byzantines, ukrainians etc...they are one of MANY rites of the Holy Catholic Church (katholikos-universal) you guys are so full of your fetish for "rome" you cant even Identify what the Catholic Church is, and yet you think yourselves worthy to Judge her...what dogs you are.

  • This is the guy who said the Sola Scriptura was not practised in Jesus' time. Next he said that the apostles did not practise Sola Scriptura. Believe what he had implied that the Sola Scriptura was invented by Martin Luther, the second Christ.

  • In that pasage he calles his mother WOMAN NOT mother:

Joh 2:4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.

What a overwhelming respect Jesus had for his mother ;)

  • .Luk 11:27 And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. Luk 11:28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

  • The word of God the Bible! Says clearly this:1Ti 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Joh 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Act 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved(Refering to Christ).

  • @Cherubaby read John 2:1-10. its a story about the wedding at Cana, Jesus' first miracle. you see, Mary asks him politely to do something before Jesus wants to, and He listens. Jesus never approved any requests that is against his will. (read matthew 12:38-39, he can say "NO") but he approved Mary's request? obviously, Mary has a special place in His heart. and if Mary has mercy on us, she can intercede for us just as she intercedes for the servants. also, we respect Mary, not worship her.

  • I don't need to know Mary to know Jesus! How can you believe that someone who died a very tortureous Death on the Cross for YOUR Sins is ferocious and unapproachable? That is ridiculous! Furthermore, Jesus only took HALF of His DNA from Mary. If He had taken 100% of her DNA then He would have been a Clone, an exact duplicate of Mary (since Jesus came under the same Natural Laws as the rest of us when He became Man).

  • If the Roman Catholic Church issues their power to Mediate the forgiveness of sin with the added comfort to the fearful of the wrath of God, to approach Mary to receive Christ, then I have not seen one statement by Jesus that Jesus would in fact refuse the Mediation. It is then the Church that now is the Body of Christ on Earth and holds the Breath of Christ, the Holy Spirit and the Church itself can Intercede to forgive sins or not. John 20:21-23 read that and see the Church holds that power.

  • What the Catholic Doctrine is, comes by the same Risen Christ who now in the Holy Spirit is with the Church, The presumption of the Protestant to dictate God's favor or not, about what the Catholics do by Grace, is a false claim of his authority to say. Just read John 20:21-23 As God sent Jesus , Jesus sent His People, as the Church and gives them the ALMIGHTY POWER of the Holy Spirit to either forgive you your sin or refuse to forgive you your sin. Jesus said the Church Mediates.

  • If Mary refused God, which she was entitled, as she was not a slave to God, but a Daughter to God, Mary gave her permission to use her own body to bring the Messiah into the world. Mediator is God, through the Messiah , who as Risen Christ gave this same equal Holy Spirit , in John 20:21-23 that the Church and it's Disciples now as the same as God sent Jesus, so Jesus sends them, to forgive sins or to not forgiven sins, the Church has the Holy Spirit Power equal to Jesus Christ.

  • The Risen Christ in John 20:21-23 gave the Holy Spirit to the Church, saying that As God sent Jesus, now Jesus was sending His Disciples, into the world and breathing on them the Holy Spirit, Jesus said " If you forgive anyone their sins, they are forgiven, and if you do not forgive them , they are not forgiven. This scripture cannot be broken , It is the RISEN CHRIST who give the Holy Spirit to all the Church , so that there is no error, Mary is the Church as much as Disciples.
