An interview at BAFTA
Svetlana Adjubei: - Ive heard a lot about CINE FANTOM club, but could you please tell us more about the history of the club, about your tasks and your mission.
Egor Popov: - CINE FANTOM as a concept has existede for quite a long time, since the middle of 80s. CINE FANTOM has been functioning as a club since 1995 and is an offspring of Aleynikov brothers and Boris Yuhanov.
Natalia Aksenova: - The name CINE FANTOM was suggested by Igor Aleynikov, one of the establishers of the cinema club and as such, the club has been functioning with this name nowadays.
E: - CINE FANTOM has actually appeared as an underground occurrence in Sovietic reality. And went on
S: - Thats why its a fantom.
N: - Certainly, its like a special language which allows the artist to express himself.
E: - in the 80s and the beginning of 90s it was underground, as a sort of opposition to the existing reality of that period. But CINE FANTOM has been changing along with the changing of the country. ideological messages have been changing as well.
N: - It is worth mentioning that in the present moment, as Egor has fairly mentioned, the cinema club keeps developing, and the films shown here, in certain sense, reflect the reality. nowadays, besides the films by classical directors, who have already been recognized, we screen the films of the ones, who have just began their progress and have just started their creativity. particularly in CINE FANTOM there is a festival called Selection. In fact its a unique event in Russia, because every director from all over Russia, from small and big cities, can send us a film for the festival which will be will defenitelybe screened. furthermore, the jury consists of spectators- average people, who will put the points to evaluate all the films. The film that gets most of the points from the audience will take part in the next stage. Consequently, the public jury chooses the popular films.
E: - In fact, its one of not so many screens in Russia, where beginners and young directors can show themselves and can raise useful contacts. There are some real examples when due to the club CINE FANTOM young directors got an opportunity to shoot feature-length films which were released afterwards.
N: CINE FANTOM has been presenting its program at Moskow International Film Festival for more than 2 years now. And in the frames of this program, as Egor has already mentioned, the pitching is being held, that means that directors, producers and mentors present their new future projects in order to meet the people, who can finance their work, first of all producers, actors etc. Then the project gets a new push, new force and comes to life. For example, as you already mentioned, over one year time now lots of projects have been produced.
E: - we are now talking about the non-commercial films, indeed
N: - basically we show lots of contemporaneous films, video art. Not so long ago we presented a Dutch program of video art in CINE FANTOM club. Some time before we hosted remarkable directors and mentors of video art program from San Francisco. Powerful projects are planned to be held soon.
E: - Every Wednesday at 8 in our screen in Fetile cinema we hold club meetings. Now we have the obligatory format the screening itself and essential discussions with authors and producers of the video, which often turns into a real performance itself, into some artistic expression that we document.
N: - We shoot it on camera, editing afterwards.
E: - In fact the famous CINE FANTOM discussion is represented as an individual program. At Rotterdam Film Festival we presented not only the films but the discussion as well!
N: - at Moscow International Film Festival there also was a full program of famous discussions. In Moscow the audience is very curious and interested and during screening of Kaufmans film people were running to the stage. I mean they were not only sitting on stairs and standing in passages, but were sitting nearly in the production control room. They were lying on the stage and were watching the film in that position.
E: - You are welcome every Wednesday at 20-00 to cinema Fitile.
N: - Were always open for you and happy to see you!
