Sacha Baron Cohen initially wanted Borat to be Albanian or Moldavian, and in any case an origin as obscure for Westeners as possible. But he picked Kazachstan. The Kazachs however are a proud nation and Kazachstan is a beautiful country and not at all as retarded and backward as some people in the West think it is. Of course most Europeans know this! But the joke is that most Americans haven't got a bloody clue. And that's what makes it so funny.
