End of 50 years of GA at Dublin Airport marked by fly past by Eddie Goggins in Extra 300L G-IJMI and final departure of Airport Flying Club Cessna 172 EI-ING, piloted by Michael Traynor. The passengers were Pearse Cahill, of Iona Airways, who brought general aviation and pilot training to Dublin airport in 1958. Also on board was Colman Corcoran of Dublin Airport Authority and a strong supporter of General Aviation for many years at Dublin airport and beyond. Over the 50 years many hundreds of pilots received their training at Dublin airport. The last person to earn their wings there on 23 October 2004 was Airport Flying Club member Aidan Barker. Aidan occupied the last seat. Escorted to runway 28 by two airport fire tenders and rescue helipcopter Sikorsky EI-MES. After take-off, EI-ING turned north and did a final pass down runway 16, waving in a final gesture of farewell, before continuing to the AFC new base at Weston airport.

  • Wow. I've never seen a 172 escorted by fire trucks and a chopper before! It looked so tiny beside them :) Sad to see GA have to leave Dublin but its a sign of the times, makes much more sense to be flying from a friendly airport like Weston.

  • Sad to see this. General aviation is under attack everywhere.

  • y dey stopped?

  • did ye spot me running away ?
