he was a jazz pianist, in his early days, and was only thought record worthy because he sounded elvis like ...im only 40 but recall charlie rich in my life since before i was 10
always has loved this man's music, he sure made my dates go oh so much better, thank you sir, thank you to the Silver Fox. ya had to be there. i'm glad i was. rest in peace, my friend. great music, just excellent... COA ...
Yes, his roots went to swing, jazz, blues, and gospel rather than country...which makes considering the fact that, upon single release by RCA Records in 1974 (Groove, an imprint, shut down around 9 years prior), it went #1 on the country chart (and the top 50 of the Hot 100), along with being 1 of a 2-way tie of a record for most #1s in a calendar year a bit ironic and weird to say the least. However, the quality was great as always, and Charlie put feeling into this, as always! R.I.P. 7/25/95
I also love this song, especially the Silver Fox's performance. I'm just imagining how it might have sounded if it were done by Ray Charles. Probably not a lot different!
The original recording by Gordon Jenkins is a masterpiece. I thought this song never got the attention it deserved and asked Joni James many times to record it. She knew it (she sang it for me) and said it was a song she liked, too. I still think it would make a great Joni James record.
