We at Gaming Sanctuary are such jolly folks, so we will upload some videos on this, our birthen day. This hot, sexy pile of generic fighting action for your enjoyment is from PDW: HOTAPEN, A.K.A. has some EX-SNK members doujin circle. From what I hear on this crazy thing we dub the Internet, the character designer was someone who had designed characters like Krizalid, but more importantly, Angel (From the K.O.F. series). This would make sense, because the character I used in this vid, Hanzo (also named Hanzo Hattori after SNK's Hanzo), looks like a sexy cross of Angel and a ninja...probably SNK's Hanzo. It should be noted that her whole name is Hattori Hanzo Uruka.
This game screams a state of incompleteness for those who have played it...as if six characters wasn't a dead giveaway. Take into account that two of these six are basically clones of each other (Kou and Crow; Hina and Shimo) and you really have like four characters...maybe. The characters who have win poses (Hanzo doesn't have one) look uninspired and the movesets are almost as basic as Street Fighter II. As you can see, I only really used two moves for Hanzo (three if you count her super move); I didn't count her dash which is nearly useless. The other characters also have two super moves (Hanzo only seems to have one) and you can upgrade moves in a Street Fighter III fashion.
Why am I being so critical to this otherwise awesome LOOKING game? Game was sold at comiket (and still is on sites like d-stage). Costs 1,365 Yen and that was the version with "four". To add insult to injury, it had numerous problems (such as with the joypad support) and you can also buy the version with "six" characters for the same price. Most people don't sell games that are so incomplete and yet they're charging 1,365 yen?
I just recently bought several interesting doujin games (not going to say what they are yet) and one has like 12-15 characters, is a racing style doujin game (very rare in the doujin scene), has a dozen stages (I think more than that, not sure) and costed a mere 210 yen, not to mention that it's based on an anime/franchise that people can identify. Sure, it was a download game, but how can someone even package a game with only four people??
If it was a beat-em-up or something, sure. The characters don't even have endings...anyway, the fighting engine is so basic that it hurts, especially since the game has potential. Hanzo can high jump out of a super move that was clearly meant to have delay time afterwards, but she has no air super move or nothing...anyway, it seems like an oversight, so it may be edited in the future. The last update was over five months ago and finding their site was a small task in and of itself. Their blog doesn't seem to talk much about it either. Do yourself a favor and play free games like Vanguard Princess or SCWU.
In this video, I use Hanzo, who has the potential to out-cheap Jyuzumaru, the game's damage-abusing character, as her combos flow more easily and aren't reliant on corners, nearly max super energy, or any real timing. Nobody seems to use her (probably not even the devs, which is why she can high jump out of moves anyway), so here she is. LOL at the A.I.; I purposely screw around with them by staying at the back of the screen, crouching and doing dumb stuff. They don't move an inch. If you really want to support PDW and their game, you can go to sites like D-Stage to pick it up or scour the Internet.
Truthfully, the creator(s) are very talented; game engine needs much work, but they have good graphics artists and music folks...that, and you should sell a game when it's actually near completion and release update patches for free accordingly, like most other circles.
